Tales on Film: Visiting Shrine Island - Part 1 (30/04/2013)

Welcome to the 2nd installment of 'Tales on Film', short photo series shot on one roll of film in one particular place, which falls outside of my regular series in London or Paris.

For the second edition we pay a touristic visit to Miyajima Island, Japan.
The island is referred to generously by it's inhabitants as 'Shrine Island'.

Paris on Film - Fujicolor Superia 400 X-TRA (16/04/2013)

I thoroughly enjoy shooting in Paris. It's a great city with great light, colour, people, architecture and style. It's essentially a street photographers dream city, apart from the draconian laws surrounding photography in public spaces. Luckily those laws have not affected me as of yet, so on I go...

Paris on Film - Fujicolor Superia 400 X-TRA (13/04/2013)

Since I've shot a few rolls of this film in Paris, I think it's fair to dedicate a series to it: "Paris on Film".
No, I couldn't think of a more original title! :(

London on Film - Fujicolor Superia 400 X-TRA (09/04/2013)

Now that the clocks have been brought forward and we it stays lighter for longer, I've been shooting more colour film, and doing so has got me searching for a cheap alternative to Kodak Portra 400 at ISO 400.
First up on the list of films to try is the Fuji Superia 400 X-TRA. I've used this film before in the Nikon FM3A and have got fairly good results. The colours are nice and vibrant but indoor shots sometimes suffer from over saturation of skintones when compared to Portra.
Anyway I do like this film and personally I prefer the over saturated colours to Portra. My only problem with it is the slightly larger grain size and lack of exposure latitude when compared to Portra 400. Although I haven't tried (maybe I will in my next roll), I doubt you'd be able to expose Superia 400 at ISO 800 and get acceptable results.

Here are some shots of London using this film in my Ricoh GR1v. I have to say, I really love the colours the film's reproduced in the first photo. Let me know what you think.

London on film - Ilford HP5 Plus @ ISO1600 (03/04/2013)

What a pleasant Easter Break, and I certainly needed in order to recharge my batteries.

Today's post is a bitter-sweet one, as It's the end of my Neopan 1600 photos, but the start of my HP5 Plus. Luckily when HP5 is pushed to ISO 1600 and processes in Microphen, it produces a look consistent with Neopan 1600.

Have a look and tell me what you think and which you prefer. All photos shot on the Ricoh GR1v and Ilford HP5 Plus, pushed to ISO 1600 and processed in Microphen stock solution:
